Trudy,

Thank you for your comments but I think you're missing the point. Every voice talent is worth full rate whether they have one year of experience or fifty! That is what I was trying to illustrate. If you want to seek low pay jobs, that is your right but that tells me that you don't feel confident enough to ask for a better rate. You are right in saying you have to start somewhere but even new voice talents like yourself are worth more than $50 for a 10-page narration. I am please that you are doing everything the correct way by getting professional training.

Terry, I understand your indignation at what you see as undervaluing of your professional skills. However, I take exception to your references to 'so called Voice Talents'. In order to BECOME professional, ie get paid work and build a resume, those of us who are training hard have to start somewhere. Remember, there was a time when you were new to this industry! I train with well respected coaches in LA (including one you use) and have not yet made a demo, so consider it perfectly reasonable to seek low-paying and pro bono work to gain basic experience. Surely there's room for all levels of experience, with appropriate recompense? I really dislike your insinuation that if you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the comment. Keep in mind, you were hearing the sound from her web cam mic and not her actual mic. I'm sure the actual recording was a lot better and keep in mind, you can remove excess noise in post.

I loved the video, however.....I hated the "Outside" noises. It sounded like there was traffic coming through an open window. If you're trying to sell me on doing VO work at home, then when you put a video, at least have a good sound quality in order for me to become a believer. Am I wrong here?

Hi Garry!

Thank you for the question. AT2020 is a decent starter mic. The quality is killer for the price but it does tend to pick up a little room noise. The XLR mics sound more professional. If you power it with a preamp/compressor that has an expandera gate, that works really well to eliminate any excess room noise. I would try that CM-87. I think it will give you a more professional sound! :-)

Terry, your words struck accord. I've just had essential major dental work that is going to put back considerably my plans for making a demo recording. Despite my best efforts my voice coach Marc Cashman has noted the changes in my sound, and I have to rethink my plans. I will continue to take classes and volunteer as an audio book reader to keep up to standard until my time comes. Thank you for your reassurance and advice.

I was wondering about a mic I'm considering buying.

At the moment, I'm just getting set up after being away from the biz a long time. I worked in radio during the 80's doing news/sports/production. I have a diploma from the Recording Workshop in Chillicothe OH. However things are much different today LOL.

What I want to know is, is an AT-2020 USB mic ($93.30 free shipping from Amazon) decent enough to get my chops back, using Audacity? The mic I will buy down the road is from Advanced Audio, who re-engineer mics.

The AA CM-87 is a large diaphragm multi-pattern condenser microphone based on the famous Neumann U87 “fet” design. The CM-87 features a similar double-sided 6 micron capsule and class “A” amplifier design. It is well suited for recording vocals or instruments in any studio or live application. The Advanced Audio CM-87 was built to a very high standard in order to capture a remarkably full yet well defined and Ultra clean sound which is perfectly suited for the most demanding radio, dialogue and recording tasks.

Specifications:

• 1.07” single diaphragm
• Selectable pattern
• Omni/Cardiod & Figure-Eight
• <200 ohm Impedance
• 25hz to 20khz
• -17db(A weight) noise
• 48v requirement
• 100hz switchable roll-off
• Switched -10db pad
• .5% distortion @ 125db
• Class “A” fet circuit
• Transformer output
• Robust shock-mount
• Aluminum road case

CM-87: $379.00
Including Shipping

I would appreciate your opinion on both mics.

Thanks,
Otis Jiry
